چکیده

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a very common contaminant of groundwater. It is used as an industrial solvent and is frequently poured into the soil. There exist bacteria that can degrade TCE. In contrast with most cases of bioremediation, the bacteria that degrade TCE do not use it as a carbon source. Instead the bacteria produce an enzyme to metabolize methane. This enzyme can degrade other organics including TCE. In this paper we model in situ bioremediation of TCE in an aquifer by using two species of bacteria: one that forms biobarriers to restrict the movement of TCE and the second one to reduce TCE. The model includes flow of water, transport of TCE and the nutrients, bacterial growth and degradation of TCE. Nonstandard numerical methods are use to discretize the equations. Some results are presented.

In situ bioremediation of chlorinated solvents.

Chlorinated solvents and their natural transformation products are the most frequently observed groundwater contaminants in the United States. In situ bioremediation using anaerobic or aerobic co-metabolic processes is a promising means of cleaning up contaminated aquifers. Studies show that under natural conditions trichloroethylene can be anaerobically degraded to dichloroethylene, vinyl chlo...

Mathematical Modeling of Natural in Situ Bioremediation to Estimate Initial Contaminant Concentration Effect

A mathematical model has been simulated to describe natural in situ bioremediation of contaminated soil. The model equations consist of a system of three non-linear partial differential equations. Sensitivity analysis conducted by numerically solving them, has demonstrated the effect of initial contaminant concentration on the time and mechanism of remediation. The result of simulation indicate...

Mathematical Modeling of Contaminated Soil Bioremediation Bases on Convection Dispersion Phenomena

A mathematical model has been analyzed for in-situ bioremediation with the purpose of remediating organic contaminated soil. Oxygen rich water when passed through the porous media of soil activates the aerobic microorganisms, leading to the biodegradation of the organic content. The model equations comprise three convection-dispersion partial differential solution of these equations has been co...

A study of chlorinated solvent contamination of the aquifers of an industrial area in central Italy: a possibility of bioremediation

Perchloroethene, trichloroethene, and other chlorinated solvents are widespread groundwater pollutants. They form dense non-aqueous phase liquids that sink through permeable groundwater aquifers until non-permeable zone is reached. In Italy, there are many situations of serious contamination of groundwater that might compromise their use in industry, agriculture, private, as the critical case o...
